What is the best advice you have received from a fellow shopkeeper about your shops or designs you would like to pass on to another shopkeeper? *

The best advice? Patience. And hard work. Keep at it and don't give up and you'll eventually get results. My motto ... Bit by Bit.

I can never stress enough the importance of good quality in all aspects of your work. I make sure that my artwork is cleaned up properly, and I do take the time to ensure that my illustrations are designed well on each and every product. I've had to learn the basics of design on my own in order to better present the products, but the whole learning experience is part of the challenge.

And yes, I have filled out several requests for clones and am still waiting for them to arrive.

What PODs do u currently use or have shops on? *

  • Cafepress
  • Printfection
  • Spreadshirt
  • MySoti
  • Greeting Card Universe (GCU)
  • Imagekind
  • Spoonflower
  • Redbubble
  • Other
What did you do with your free time before zazzle or other POD's....and what do you do with it now? *
I used to read and write. A lot.

Now? I no longer have any free time! Fortunately, I love my work and art, so spend pretty much every minute I have on it. That includes research and tutorials and learning how to market myself better, leaving barely enough time to eat and sleep.
What programs do you use to make your designs *
  • Photoshop (any version)
  • Illustrator
  • Other raster software
Tell us more about what you like and do not like about each software you use, what makes it special. *

I love Corel Painter 12! I'm a beginner but whenever I have the time I dabble in it and hope something decent enough appears. In my non-digital art I use mainly colored pencils so it's quite lovely to wield digital brushes and get a sense of the paints without getting all messed-up.

Apart from Corel the software I use most is photoshop, though it's mainly used to clean up my illustrations to prepare them for .png based files. And to draw out my typography designs from the scanned sketches.

I'm still pretty much a beginner in both the above programs, so am constantly looking for tutorials and tips, as they've become essential to my work.

Will you make custom orders? *
Yes - but only for people I know personally
Elaborate on your answer above regarding custom orders... *
I used to do custom orders, but stopped because it takes me a long time to draw (in colored pencil) illustrations or create hand-drawn text designs, and unfortunately, I found that more often than not the customers who ordered them would just disappear.

I have to prioritize my time, and custom orders end up taking up too much of it for too little reward either emotionally or financially.

What is the best advice you have received from a fellow shopkeeper about your shops or designs you would like to pass on to another shopkeeper? *

Repeat this mantra - "I am not the shopper, give the shopper what they may want" - it is important to remember that just because YOU may not want that design on a pet dish, does not mean someone else may not....they may not be intending to use it as a pet dish!!! maybe they want it to throw jewelry in or candy...maybe you don't like your photo on a tshirt - but someone else may, maybe they don't plan to wear it, maybe they are going to cut the shirt and use the image on the shirt as part of a quilt....

You are not the shopper and you do not know what is going thru their mind...or why they like your image or that product....so offer it, let them decide if they like it or not...

Also organize by designs!!!! zazzle will give the shopper the option to sort by product type on the sidebar whether you like it or not....so when you organize do it by design!!! then the shopper can quickly see there is a matching human and doggy shirt - or coffee mug and placemat....shopper are more apt to buy multiple items if theya re on the same page and put in front of them...it is called impulse buying....the same reason stores put candy at the checkout!!!

What PODs do u currently use or have shops on? *
  • Zazzle
  • Cafepress
  • Skreened
  • Inktastic
What did you do with your free time before zazzle or other POD's....and what do you do with it now? *
I doodled, took pictures and played online....i just didn't make money on them!!

Zazzle and other POD's allow me to take my hobbies and put them to use making some money on them.

I do also like to crochet, make jewelry, read, travel and cook....and I still do all of them!
What programs do you use to make your designs *
  • Photoshop (any version)
  • Illustrator
  • Inkscape
Tell us more about what you like and do not like about each software you use, what makes it special. *
I have Photoshop and Illustrator CS4, as well as inkscape and Photoshop 7

Personally I prefer Photoshop 7, I am self taught on it and I use it for everything, since it is what I have and what I know. I love it for it's simplicity in how it does things.

I use Illustrator to "live trace" when i do hand sketches and scan them into the PC, live trace will go over and smooth out the lines so they don't look scratchy.

Inkscape I use for doodling it is free and easy to use, i like it better then illustrator for many simple things.
Will you make custom orders? *
Yes - sometimes free, sometimes fee required upfront
Elaborate on your answer above regarding custom orders... *
I rarely charge up front, unless the person wants a great deal of work, or has no general idea of what they want and I will have to make multiple mock-ups, that will not be able to placed into general sale in my shop.

I do not charge friends and family, and otherwise if what they want can be added to my store, i do not charge.

I love to do onesies...my pictures sort of lend themselves to kid clothing...my favorite is the grumpy hippo on the onesie below

http://www.zazzle.com/potamous_on_purple_onesie_tshirt-235858916941692468

Something about that hippo makes me happy. Not sure why...she seems to make other people happy too...its not a huge seller, but that hippo is the one that I get the most comments about. It was originally painted for my little girl. I've always called her "Livy Potamus" and wanted to paint something that I could put on a t-shirt for her.

My kids in one way or another are the inspiration for nearly everything I've painted...

I'm not sure anything I'm doing is a good fit for television. I could see a throw pillow with one of my images ending up on Grey's Anatomy or something like that...some of the images while made with children in mind are on the abstract art side of the spectrum and would probably be a good fit for something like that...this one is a good example...http://www.zazzle.com/she_loves_me_throw_pillow_american_mojo_pillow-189984289216784554

other than that...I'm sort of out of touch with television. I could see my stuff ending up on the disney channel...but most of my disney channel references come from netflix so I'm not sure shows like Wizards of Waverly Place are still on...though my kids love that one.

http://www.zazzle.com/panda_bear_chef_likes_honey_badgers_tshirt-235002835424362823
"Panda Chef Likes Honey Badger... Grilled" is my favorite mostly because it makes total fun of the honey badger movement that still remains high on the Best Sellers list. Hopefully, there are customers out there who have a sense of humor like my own that leans toward being a wee bit sick, if you know what I mean. Panda Chef was originally drawn in pencil and created with a lady in Italy in mind. A couple of months back, she wanted an apron with a drawn panda bear that I completed a few days later. Panda Chef also likes honey badger with bbq sauce, by the way.

This bone china cup was created with a brushes for Gimp software. Once the colored images were in place, I applied a bevel to make the leaves and flowers appear more dimensional. The leaves and flowers complement the delicate bone china. The bone china cup would fit into NCIS LA in which you will see Heddi drinking tea from beautiful cups. I can see her now... dunking her tea bag into a mug I designed while she mulls over strategy created to catch the newest bad guy. Then just before taking her first sip, she holds up the cup to admire.

One day in August, 2011, while surfing the internet looking for ways to sell my drawings, paintings and photography, I found Zazzle.com. I happened to notice "become a seller" or some such verbiage and realized that without any charge to me I could show off and hopefully make money with my art. Making money was key as I'm an older individual and there aren't many job opportunities for older women despite my years of experience in the publishing field. The sales I have made - although not yet enough to make me a pro - has increased my self-confidence ten fold. I have come to realize that my art - to whatever degree - is appreciated and sought. I have three words for that: Hurray for me!

My whole "I Will Not Sink" line is my favorite because it's an inspiring quote, with a beautiful depiction of it. I am also a sea girl so anything nautical makes me happy.

That whole Weird Bee store is going to be geared towards inspiring/motivational quotes. I think in today's world we all need a little boost to get us through the day. Whether it's telling ourselves we are beautiful or that we are worth it. There will be a whole section about bullying and all of my proceeds will go towards a charity that helps children who have to deal with it.

This is a hard question, because I would love to see any of my designs on any TV show, it would be amazing! But if I had to pick just one I would go with, (http://www.zazzle.com/tattoo_guitar_shirt-235190651261520658) my Tattoo Guitar Shirt on Suburgatory. I think it would fit Tess really well because she has a very Indie/Artistic vibe about her.

It is a line drawn electric guitar with vines and leaves wrapped around it. Has a tattoo feel to it, and is very colorful. It was one of my first designs and holds a special place in my heart as the jump start to my career.

This Urn is one of my favorite all time photos that gets put on all the products at Zazzle (though only when it looks right!).

As soon as I saw the flower pot against the rustic orange wall at a monastery in Crete, Greece I just knew I had to capture it! It's so simple really, yet screams the Greek islands and the Mediterranean... I simply love it and was glad it caught my eye that day... and that I was able to do what I saw justice in the camera - Sometimes these things don't turn out as planned sadly!

Wow thats a hard, and rather unique question! It would have be one of my photography prints but choosing which one is impossible! I have briefly pondered how set-designers choose the products to display in characters houses in soap and thought "wouldn't it be cool if I had a print on display in the house of a major tv character" but as for which show and which actor/acress I would choose I have no idea... I'm not in the U.S either so if I did name a show you probably wouldn't have any idea what I was talking about lol ;)

I Googled something along the lines of "sell photography online / make money with photography" and came across Zazzle. I was dubious at first but since no upfront money was required figured I had nothing to loose other than time... That was back in 2006 and I've not looked back! Seeing another sale "ping in" whether I've made $0.20 or $20.00 keeps me going with my store, tweaking it and making new products .

http://www.zazzle.com/new_day_gardens_business_plaquard_template_dl_pm_plaque-200861630158140169

I really am enjoying the process of making products that are useful for other garden business owners. These plaquards are great signage for a business that is hosting a table at a boutique.

They are fully customizable so that they can be used for any garden business but they are ready to go for the daylily nursery. Daylily nurseries often host tables at regional meetings, national meetings, winter symposiums and other venues where a large number of daylily collectors and hybridizer might gather.

The color theme of this particular plaque is balanced and appealing to me. The photograph at the top is of an award winning miniature daylily called 'Pardon Me' that I grow in my garden. It is one of my favorite dayliles because of how many flowers can be open on a single day.

http://www.zazzle.com/autism_awareness_shirt-235637058713355062

I would put my autism awareness shirts on every TV talk show that would feature them because more people need to be aware of what this disability looks like. As a single parent of two young children on the autism spectrum there are times when I find strangers avoiding us, staring, and making rude comments simply because they don't understand that these kids are really doing the best they can in public places. It is a real challenge. There were several years when I literally took vacation time from work in order to go grocery shopping without the kids. Parents often feel so isolated. Even family & friends make assumptions that the child's behavior must be due to poor parenting or that the parent is making more of the disability than it really is. I lost most of my support network. Few churches are equipped to support special needs kids so even my primary support network of a church "family" was lost.

Others from a common forum had tried Zazzle to promote their garden businesses. I am delayed in really building my nursery while searching for affordable land to grow on. In the mean time I wanted a way to promote my brand and I have a lifetime of garden related photographs just waiting to be shared with the public. Zazzle is perfect for that and a better fit than CafePress. I enjoy the products they offer & the design tools. The forums are really helpful.

http://www.zazzle.com/squirrel_drinking_tropical_drink_poster-228782673720809008
This is my favorite design and it also sells really well...especially the poster, although the photo comes on all kinds of products. It's my favorite because: 1) I love taking funny squirrel pictures and 2) this picture always seems to get a chuckle. I know because I sell my photos at art fairs as well as on Zazzle, and I get to see peoples' reactions firsthand. Oh, and 3) I like to show that animals can have human characteristics and qualities, and this picture reminds me of some people I know, lol! And maybe some people can identify with it too. It reminds me of what I was like in my teenage years ;~)

This picture's also my favorite because it really happened (it isn't Photoshopped). I set it up knowing that my "pet" squirrel would go for the drink. (It's only colored water, by the way. No squirrels were harmed in the making of this picture! )

One last reason that this picture is my favorite is that the squirrel in the picture isn't around anymore but the photo is a special memory of her. She was the best squirrel model I ever had!

http://www.zazzle.com/squirrel_and_cookie_jar_speckcase-176137964050575215
This is a photo of a very determined squirrel using leverage to try to open the lid of a cookie jar. I submitted this picture to my first-ever photo contest at Canadian Geographic magazine and it won second place, which I was thrilled about. So they paid me well for it and published it. They also included it the next year in a collection called Canadian Geographic's Best Wildlife Photos, which was a real honor. It's also been published in a couple of other books and magazines.

I wish I could've gotten this picture on Oprah! I haven't watched tv for many years now but once in awhile I see a show and I think the Ellen DeGeneres show would be a good match because the picture has humor but people also identify with the human-like nature of the squirrel so determined to get what it wants.

How did you find zazzle - and what kept you going with it? *

I found an artist on the web who recommended the quality of Zazzle's t-shirts over those of Cafe Press. I already had a shop on Cafe Press but never did much with it. I joined Zazzle about a year and a half ago and had a good Christmas season my first year but never really added too much to my shop. This past fall I was determined to put more time into my shop though and I've seem some fantastic results. I ended up quitting Cafe Press because I thought there was a big difference in attitude between the two companies.

There are lots of things I like about Zazzle...I like that I can work from home, of course. I find Zazzle's support excellent and the shopkeepers super friendly and helpful. I'm a professional photographer who sells my work at art fairs and farmer's markets but I live in a cold climate so I can't sell my work from December through April. So I've been putting time into my Zazzle shops instead and it's really paid off. I think it's great that with hard work, I can see results! This past December I paid the mortgage with my Zazzle earnings and I'm super happy about that!

http://www.zazzle.com/multiplication_abstract_smoke_blackberry_bold_case-179514792318875730

My favorite design from my shop is the Multiplication abstract smoke. It's actually a photograph, not really a design, but I still love to play with it. It can be used on almost any item available with a few tweaks here and there. When I'm creating something new with it, I can move the image around in the design area and it seems like it's a whole photograph! Although, I will admit, sometimes my artist's OCD gets the better of me and I just HAVE to squish it into place so it looks just like the other pieces that've been created with it! But, hey, who doesn't love options?!

I would love to see the Blackberry Bold case with the abstract teal smoke photograph on the television show Grimm. The show is all about today's reality meeting pieces of the Grimm's fairy tales and the double life of police detective Nick Burkhardt as a "Grimm". The idea of reality meeting fantasy is a perfect way to describe this particular piece of artwork being displayed as a phone case! Plus, how cool would it be for Nick to make a call, displaying that case in all its glory, to Monroe, a Blutbad (a wolf-like creature), while he's actually on official police business?

How did you find zazzle - and what kept you going with it? *

I had actually come across Zazzle a few years ago while doing some research on print-on-demand companies. I dug through a lot of the offerings and was duly impressed, and, to be honest, a little intimidated. The site was bookmarked for farther investigation, but life happened, so I just never came back around to it. Recently, I've been getting quite a few requests for all sorts of items with my fine art pieces on them. Calendars and mugs were the most requested, but there were quite a few people asking for magnets, coasters, phone cases. This led me back to my old bookmarks. Zazzle seemed to be the best fit for what I wanted and gave me a great opportunity to expand into new and interesting products. So after a little tinkering, a lot of forum-hunting, and many hours of playing, my new shop was born and I couldn't be happier with it!

I find this cartoon mouse adorable with his shy, hopeful look and the image always makes me smile. I wanted an image that was meaningful for more than just Valentine's Day, one that could memorialize an anniversary or other important date for dating, engaged or married couples. A parent can even gift this to a child to contain their first iphone because this is a totally 'G' rated image or even an exchange between friends is appropriate use of this case. It's versatile use coupled with its ability to make me smile is what makes the Mouse with Heart design my favorite.

http://www.zazzle.com/ghost_horse_believe_keychain-146316450036710862
The TV show would be the CW's 'Supernatural' and the product would be the Believe keychain (the design is also available on a magnet, plate, etc.). The design features a translucent white ghost horse on a black background, an ethereal light string and the word Believe. The show Supernatural, now in its seventh season, is an ongoing battle between good and evil, fought by brothers Sam and Dean Winchester, and their ongoing struggle to not only combat evil but wrestle with their own inner demons and faith or lack of faith. The Believe keychain is a symbol with various meanings: that you believe in the supernatural, and, depending on which Winchester brother you agree with, you believe in the eventual triumph of good over evil.

I found Zazzle when a fellow artist on Renderosity mentioned he has a Zazzle store and then explained to me that it was a great place to create posters for his artwork. After visiting Zazzle, reading through the forums and rules, and realizing the creative opportunity Zazzle offers, I decided to join also. Zazzle has allowed me to broaden my creativity and given me a much wider selection of artwork ideas. I'm fairly new to Zazzle but I absolutely not only love it but always look forward to the excitement of product creation.

I love creating funny cartoons because there is nothing better in life then making people laugh and poking fun at how crazy we all really are.
I have four crazy kids, three girls and a son named Jake which is where the store name "Snakesmom" was born. My poor son has had to endure a LOT of emotions putting up with the four crazy women in his life. This is also the reason many of the cartoons I create are of siblings picking on each other because I hear and see a whole lot of that around my house.

Custom Family Road Trip Cartoon Shirt
I would love to see this shirt on Red Forman (the father on That 70's Show) while he is driving his two kids Eric and Laurie off to a family camping trip. This particular t.v. family has a lot of laughs and sarcasm in everything that they say to each other. I just know a family camping trip with this bunch would start out with good intentions and end up with the dad (Red) threatening to put his foot in someone's a**.
Face it, when you have kids... most family events make us feel the same way as him.

How did you find zazzle - and what kept you going with it? *
I stumbled upon Zazzle one day after reading a forum post on a writing site with people talking about how much they loved the site. I have always loved to create art, write poetry and take pictures so Zazzle is the perfect fit for me since I can do all three.
One thing I truly love about Zazzle is the quality of the products in which we put our art. I have purchased many items from other Zazzle artists and my own store and not once have I ever not loved the quality of the product. I am proud to give gifts that come from Zazzle because I know that each gift is special and is going to be a cherished keepsake.

I really enjoyed working on this design..and how it turned out! I worked this one up as a fabric pattern, it is a repeating design, but also reads in smaller sections. I Love the romance of an ancient castle by the sea, been worn away by the years and ages of waves lapping the walls. A lot of my Prosepine designs feature Mermaids, and in this design you can clearly see two, plus tails and scales dipping and diving amidst the sea foam. Another inspiration source was classic Japanese indigo fabric, there is such mastery of design there, it is like a school in itself!

This lovely Mermaid swims by trailing a long strand oc shining sea pearls (of course!). She joyfully follows her Seahorse companion! In classic indigo and white. This is also a repeating pattern and was designed for fabric.

I can't name a TV show off the top of my head! But I can imagine the girls chatting about their lives around the table, sharing their lives and nutting out their problems.

I can see it in an office scene, someone cradling a Mug, gazing out large glass windows towards the boardwalk with the rolling ocean in the distance...contemplative music playing, only to be interupted by...

I have been working at art for a long time, but only recently moved over to a more graphic format. Once I started playing around with computer graphics I was fumbling about the internet and stumbled across Cafe Press and Zazzle. I tried both, but prefer the spirit of Zazzle! I havn't had a huge amount of sales, but I keep at it because I love working and perfecting a skill, and I know a lot of people can make an income from Zazzle.
