What advice can you give to someone who wants to become a proseller? *
Give it time. It will eventually happen if you design something that people want and like.
Rome wasn't built in a day and neither was any big business. Just do what you can, when you can and eventually it all adds up and you will sell.
One of the most important things is to tag your keywords. Use colours, names,(but no brand names) and make sure everything is a good resolution.

What benefits do you see for choosing this number of stores? and what do you recommend for others who are just starting out on whether to choose 1 store or multiple stores? *
I chose to do a few different stores as they were all different and I have themed my stores. I wanted to put like with like, so that it wouldn't confuse people.
I put animals with animals, Digital art and photographs together and anything to do with names together. That way confusion is minimised.

Try flyers or if you sell something on say Ebay, make up a business card with your Zazzle store on the other side.

  • have 2+ days per week with no sale

What advice can you give to someone who wants to become a proseller? *

To sum it up in one word.......PATIENCE!! (But I see I must use atleast 30 words so I will keep on ;)....) If you don't have patience you won't get very far. This is still my personal struggle. Some days I have no patience for this but I re-group and keep on keeping on. Offer a variety of designs on a variety of products. The more designs (good designs) you have the better your chance of becoming a "pro". The more products you offer, the better chance of becoming a pro. Don't think of yourself as the buyer. Think of what someone else may want. If you only offer that cute little doggy design on a mug you are missing out. Someone else may want that cute little doggy on a key chain for their daughter. A very important thing- don't be afraid to jack up your prices. Just because YOU wouldn't pay $25 for a t-shirt that features a frog doesn't mean someone else wouldn't. People will pay that much for something they WANT. They may have a family member that collects frog items and your frog t-shirt just may be the one thing they need to complete their collection so they're willing to pay the price.
Don't be afraid of asking questions!! This was a toughy for me when I first starting selling on PODS because I was afraid someone would think I was crazy for asking such a simple question. BUT, we all started from the beginning. NONE of us knew exactly what to do when we started. We had to learn and there's nothing wrong with learning!
And I can't forget- DEDICATION! You have to treat this like a "real job". You have to spend time making quality products that people will want to buy. You have to put your all in to it to make it to Pro.......well at least that's what I have had to do. THIS IS MY JOB!! A full time job. This is MY only income (not counting my husbands). So I have to "pretend" I am sitting behind a desk at a "real job" and do my best.
Oh and how can I forget about the all important SEO! Make sure you have detailed descriptions describing your design. I always add the word "gift" in there somewhere ;) Because people are always looking for "gifts" for loved ones.

How many stores do you have? *
5-10
What benefits do you see for choosing this number of stores? and what do you recommend for others who are just starting out on whether to choose 1 store or multiple stores? *

I started off with 1 store and now have (I think) 7 or 8. When I first started at Zazzle I made 1 store that offers a variety of design themes. Those sections started getting more and more sales and just grew. I decided it was easier to make more niche stores because it was easier to advertise those. I can now decide which store I want to use as my signature on different forums. If I am on a photography forum I use my photography store. If I want to advertise to my teacher friends I can send them to my school themed store. I find it easier to blog for separate stores. It is tougher trying to keep up with more stores but I have found it easier to advertise in the long run. So I would recommend starting off with store. Once you see what section is going to take off, then I'd open a 2nd store for that niche. I have some sections that I wouldn't even try to make a full store out of. It just wouldn't be worth my time.
But you will have to find your own "groove" and figure out what works best for YOU!!

What types of advertising do you recommend for someone just starting out and why? *

Word of mouth!! I think I get more sales just by talking to family and friends about what I do. They then pass the word along to their friends, and then them to their friends. I have gottin a lot of bulk orders for our school, youth leagues, and day cares in my hometown because of word of mouth.
Other than that I leave business cards everywhere!! Leave them on the table with your tip. Leave business cards in library books that you return. Use the community bulletin bulletin boards hanging in your town. When traveling leave them in restrooms, restaurants, community boards, etc.
I also have a "page" on Facebook. I have "friends" that I have no idea who they are. They seen their "friend" "like" my page so they "liked" it too.
Blog- something I seriously need to do more. Search engines DO find your blogs! Just don't be lazy (like me) about it ;)

What advice can you give to someone who wants to become a proseller? *
Don't give up! It can take sometimes a year or more but if you continue to promote and fill your store and designs it will happen. Better to find a niche group to sell to rather than trying to make tones of things for everyone. And by niche I mean either by product or design/style. Like a mostly tee shirt store or a store aimed at animal lovers. You can branch out with more stores later but stay focused on one topic at a time and run with it. Never give up!

What benefits do you see for choosing this number of stores? and what do you recommend for others who are just starting out on whether to choose 1 store or multiple stores? *
I have an anchor store with samples of each of my style/design lines. And a different store for each basic niche. A symbols store, a cat/animal centered store, a nature/botanical store and so on. That way a person can get an idea of my designs and products at my main store and if they are interested in seeing more of a particular design line they can go to that store. Making navigation easier and they are not overwhelmed with a massive store with tons of sections.

Of course I am still working on several stores and my own 5 year business plan.

Get business cards. I know in this day and age of electronic ad and info studies show people who have business cards and hand them out still make more sales and connections than those without. It's inexpensive and easy. Anything free! All social networks no matter how popular or small. It's all free. I advertised with my class reunion booklets. Remember a lot of advertising can be tax deductible. Learn to write a press release and use the sites online for that purpose. And encourage people to use your products in their referral stores and on Sqidoo! Every sale counts.

Make quality, unique products. Learn to make templates that work correctly. Learn to layer designs - you don't have to know PhotoShop, there are free programs. I use Paint[dot]net. Work on having quality blogs or other places to advertise off Zazzle. These are the things I've had to learn over my 3 1/2 years of working here and it does take time, but ProSeller is not hard to reach.

I wish I didn't have the 7 stores I have. I work most on only a couple of them at any given time. If I had known when I started what I know now, I would have one store (maybe 2 or 3 at most) broken down into easy to find sections for the other niche items. Once a store begins to grow it's harder to keep up with the others and I spend about 60 hours a week working on Zazzle.

Squidoo isn't listed above, and that is one place that is very helpful for advertising. I use it to show off my best selling and new designs and update it as I go. It's very easy to use as well. I advise adding some info to the Squidoo pages and not just slapping up designs. Talk to the customer. I do not pay for any advertising.

Find a niche, love what you do and work hard. Zazzle is by no means a "great rich quick" scheme but if your work is marketable and you persist, you really can work from home, doing what you love. It's awesome! :)
How many stores do you have? *

What benefits do you see for choosing this number of stores? and what do you recommend for others who are just starting out on whether to choose 1 store or multiple stores? *

My husband and I started out with a superstore (SugarVsSpice) which we worked on for over a year. Most of my stuff ended up being pet-related so I made the tough decision to start over with a new store; CartoonizeMyPet. The move wasn't easy, and took several months to recreate everything and set up a new dedicated website... but in the end I'm pleased I did. Now I have a much more marketable brand, a website design to match AND I can make use of Zazzle's excellent API to change the color of my pets and earn additional money from referrals.

Choosing between one store and several can be very tricky. It really depends on your target audience and how much of a single category you have (or think you'll have.)

If you have a little bit of everything, then maybe think about creating a superstore... but if you have say, a lot of cute designs and a lot sports car ones, you might consider making them 2 separate stores. That way you can really focus on marketing them to their different audiences.

What types of advertising do you recommend for someone just starting out and why? *

Definitely set up a Facebook page, Twitter account, Squidoo page(s) and blog. I'm not really in to social network stuff personally, but it's served me well for my store.

As well as building up some great free advertising from people spreading the word about you, it will also help your ranking with Google. The more often Google sees links and mention of your site, the higher up you go!

I'm always surprised how quickly Google spots my new blog articles. I recommend using a lot of "buzz" words in your blogs, esp in the "ALT" tag for pictures, because Google eats them up. Eg rather than "Dog Shoes" say "Pink Love Heart Long Coat Chihuahua Womens Slip-on Shoes." You'll be amazed at how often people will arrive at your site from random Google searches that picked up words in your blog.

Oh that reminds me! Set up Statcounter and/or Google Analytics for your store too. They'll give you so much valuable information about where people are coming from, which will help you see how effective your advertising is.

As far as paid advertising; I'd recommend Facebook, esp if you have a niche store. It's easy to set up and you can be really specific about who you want to target. You can also set how much you'd like to spend per day and it will not, under any circumstances, go over, which is great. It's a wonderful way to build up fans to your Facebook page too!

I want to start other stores, I think targeting a certain genre of interest is important to getting people to notice you and obtaining a lucrative market. I only have one shop now because after six years in this business, I am still building and learning. I came from CafePress after they dogged out their shop owners and have had to learn a whole other world with Zazzle. When I feel confident that I can produce designs, market them and make sales working with Zazzle, then I will open more websites.

I'm by myself so the work is immense but if I had my way, I would have several shops open to specific markets.

Stay away from paid advertising. I've spent a bundle on that just to try it out and lost my butt. Pay Per Click advertising seems like it would be a great way to go but I've done that too and lost big. Just because someone clicks your ad doesn't mean they will buy. Heh, I even felt like my competitors were clicking on my ads just to run my bills up.
When it comes to advertising, I've had the best success with just learning honest Search Engine Optimization techniques. It's a tough, complicated subject but if you can grasp the basics, you can see results pretty quick and without any costly advertising rates.

Ugh, it's funny. I love a design when it first goes up. I think, "Oh yeah, man! That's freakin' beautiful! I'm gonna rake it in on this one!" Then a week later I go back and bash myself in the head with my mouse wondering why I even posted the design.

Okay, I just went through my entire inventory and have decided that this question is completely impossible to answer. If I had my way, I would trash all the designs on there now and rebuild them all from scratch. LOL

I guess if I had to pick one..ugh.

It Doesn't Have To Be Like This Grenade

I like it because it is a word art design. I'm getting into that sort of design lately. I think it's cool. Heh after a bit I will get bored with word art and go onto another genre.

I like this design in particular because it is anti-war. I used to be a straight up conservative, angry, fearful, war hungry even and then I started looking at all the money wasted, and the lack of success in anything getting done by fighting a war over it, heh, not to mention my son wants to go into the service.

It just seems silly to me. I think that's where my next site will go. I want to wake Americans up to the violence, war-infused culture we've all be brought up in. I want them to realize what I have and try to find ways where we can all just live, love and find happiness. Heh, pipe dream I know but hey, should make for some great shirt designs!

I truly believe for someone just starting out that one store is just the right size. Use this store to learn and experiment with your designs, products offered and store lay out. Once you have a good understanding of that store you then might branch out to additional stores if you have "niche" type products and or designs. I chose to have one store to keep it simple and use categories within the store to act like I have specialty stores .

Other than passing out an occasional business card and posting in the forum I do not do any advertising. I should and it is in the best interest to new Zazzlers to advertise as much as possible to achieve their goals. I believe you should start out with "free" advertising such as blogs, squidoo and expand from there.

Visit the Zazzle help section and learn the design sizes so you can adjust your images accordingly.
Start cranking products out like gangbusters!
Blog, Tweet, and create an Facebook Fan Page to advertise your creations.
How many stores do you have? *
2-5
What benefits do you see for choosing this number of stores? and what do you recommend for others who are just starting out on whether to choose 1 store or multiple stores? *
None yet. I made proseller with one store. The second is only two weeks old. A fellow Zazzler posted that having more than one store will generate more income than just having one huge shop, so I decided to branch out a bit. Here's hoping that she was right :).
What types of advertising do you do? *
  • Off-Zazzle websites
  • Blogs (blogspot, wordpress, etc.)
  • Microblogs (twitter, plurk, etc.)
  • SNS (facebook, myspace, etc.)
  • Handouts (flyers, stickers, business cards, etc.)
  • Gift Bags (emmys, MTV awards, etc.)
  • Other Free
  • Other Paid
What types of advertising do you recommend for someone just starting out and why? *
For someone just starting out, I would recommend starting with Blogging, Facebook, and Twitter because they're free and don't take much time. In the beginning, it's important to focus more on adding products to your shop than promotion, so that you have something to advertise. If you get too many people visiting an empty store, you may lose a large percentage of your potential customer base, otherwise.
Not talking dollar wise, just volume & frequency of sales do you... (select all that apply, some answer may be contradictory based on seasonal sales) *
  • have 1-5 days per month with no sale
  • sell under 5 products per day on most days
  • rarely have shoppers purchse multiple items
  • sell a lot of lower priced items like postcards and buttons
  • sell a good mix of all items regardless of price
